Consider this a home away from home because it was used as a residence by the owners, who left everything in place. Just about anything you would have at home is available.
Hale Kepani was constructed in 1962 out of redwood and mahogany. Though the three sisters who had the house built were portuguese, it was designed in a japanese style, which is why we named it the "Japanese House." Design elements include sliding shoji screens, split shelf chigaidana, and an indoor koi pond, which we have converted to a zen sand garden. It was appointed with the very best fixtures for the times. We left the bathrooms largely intact, so it still has the real look of the '60s. All the major appliances are quite new. Each bedroom has a lanai and we have set up the largest one next to the kitchen as a dining area. Year round pleasant weather makes this place a wonderful place to gather round.
The craftsmanship of this house and attention to detail are something you are not likely to find easily. All dressers and cabinets are built-in, not merely nailed to the walls. The floor is solid planked mahogany over joists; no squeaking whatsoever. The kitchen is commodious and has everything you might need. We have added antiques and updated items in the way of furniture, rugs, and light fixtures in an attempt to preserve the quality and ambiance of the Hale Kepani.
