Where We Begin
HALE KEPANI IS NOW FOR SALE!
Hale Kepani, meaning Japanese House in Hawaiian, is our spacious custom home situated on a cul-de-sac in a peaceful residential area. It is within comfortable walking distance of downtown shops, theater and restaurants, and is also very close to the astronomy centers, hospital, and university.
Built in 1962 of redwood walls and mahogany floor, this well-appointed house, much ahead of its time, was designed with wheelchair access in mind and features no steps. A concrete ramp allows access to the garden. Most doorways have extra-wide bypass doors. It also incorporates many japanese elements such as staggered shelves and pocket shoji doors. The elegant entry leads to a sand garden, overlooked by the formal dining area, and the living room, which is also our library.
While we have no airconditioning, the house is kept at a comfortable temperature by ceiling and floor fans, ceiling insulation, four-foot eaves, and many wall openings that provide excellent cross-ventilation. Hawaii's weather encourages outdoor living and Hale Kepani's three lanais make it possible. You will find yourself dining often on the large lanai outside the modern, sizable kitchen, which is completely furnished. A pass-through window facilitates the meal service. The commodious laundry, with washer, dryer and sink, in the adjoining room has a built-in ironing station.
The spacious master bedroom has its own tiled bathroom, a wheelchair-friendly shower with handrails and a bench seat. The vanity has an open area below the sink for easier wheelchair access. The large front bedroom has a queen bed as well as a twin that converts to a sofa. The smaller, middle bedroom has a trundle bed that accommodates two people but the lower bed can be elevated to create a wider bed. All closets are cedar-lined. A large hall bathroom with tiled shower (also with a bench seat) and separate tub serves these two bedrooms. A private space within this bathroom harbors the toilet and bidet. Each bedroom has an lanai and there is one half-bathroom accesible when outstide playing or sunning in our fully enclosed backyard garden.
he craftsmanship of this house and attention to detail are something you are not likely to find easily.
Get To Know Us
We bought this home for my mother, who we knew would eventually need a wheelchair. In her last years, she did and all our lives were made much easier because of this house. My husband, now retired, grew up across the street.
